Moving forward

Ran 8 miles today with Marc. We're coming off a week of frigid weather (lows in the teens, highs in the 20's) but clear and sunny. It was supposed to end last night with a "wintery mix" storm of ice, sleet and possibly snow. I was fully prepared to skip this run today, but woke up to cloudy skies and dry streets. When I run by myself I stick to tried and true routes. I'm such a creature of habit. But with Marc we usually just head out the door and run where the mood strikes us. Today I was imagining 5, but it soon became apparent it would be a longer run. I hadn't brought along a bottle so we had to stop at New Seasons for a drink of water. Unfortunately they didn't have their samples out yet or we might have had a snack too.

Last week my "long" run was 7.5 miles and included the trail along Oaks Bottom. This is the trail where I slipped on the ice in January of 2008. So I've returned to the scene of the crime, so to speak, and survived. I have that monkey off my back, to use another euphemism. I guess I can move forward now.

Overall, I feel great. I've been hovering around 20 miles and 4 runs a week for the past few weeks and have been increasing by a few miles each week. If I run my planned 5 miles tomorrow, I'll finish the week with 23.5. My base building is coming along pretty much as planned. Still haven't gotten back to Wildwood....hopefully that will happen next week if the weather cooperates.

I've registered for the Tacoma City Marathon on May 2nd. It's the maniac reunion so it should be a lot of fun. Marc may run it too if we can work out the logistics of what to do with the little guy. Now I just need to decide if I want to follow a marathon training schedule. I'm leaning towards no, but will probably map out a few 20+ mile runs.

I'm trying hard to appreciate every step and every mile. But really, I'm dreaming of the day when I can knock out 20+ mile runs most weekends. That, to me, is living.

Awesome, Sarah! 8 miles sounds so far - you've come a long way. I think a real marathon program will be in your future - just keep doing what you're doing. Keep telling us about your progress, too. It's so uplifting to see someone come back from the tough days of not running. Nice work!

A marathon, heh? That's a big step. It's great that you have come this far and have the confidence to aim for that.

Excellent! 8 miles! I would think just build a base for a bit. Find a marathon training program you like and back track it from the May race. You will have plenty of time to get the long runs in and stay injury free.

Sarah,
So glad you are running again! I could relate about 'returning to the scene of the crime'. After my first big trail accident 2 years ago (the spurter puncture wound on Phoneline trail), I was afraid to go back on that trail. I have since been back many times, but the initial 'reunion' was scary. Getting 'back on the horse' is scary and a lot of people never do it. You are so persistent and tough and that is one of the reasons I have always loved reading your blog. I still can't wait to meet you someday! I'll plan on going up in your neck of the woods sometime in the next year.

Yay Sarah! I'm so glad it's all going well. I'm going to register for Tacoma too, just haven't gotten around to it yet. We ought to be able to find a friend or a spouse for the little guy to hang out with. I'll give it some thought.
