Forest Park 50K 2008 version

Another year, another Forest Park 50k. In 2006, I volunteered, having never run an ultra and wanting to find out what it was all about. That year, it seemed like you could count on two hands the number of participants in each race (10k, 20k, 30k, 50k). Last year I ran and the crowd had grown. This year it was Marc's turn and, relatively, it was a mob scene. Great to see so many out there hitting the trails!

Many of the usual suspects were there and the little guy and I passed the time by traveling to the aid stations. Its fun seeing the other side and getting to know some of the other spectators and families cheering on their runners. Okay, not as fun as running but I'll take what I can get. Marc finished in 6:34 and I thought he had beat my time from last year by one minute. Curses! But lo and behold, when I looked up my time it was 6:33. I'm still ahead on at least one benchmark! And it doesn't matter that he and Bret missed a marker and ran 1.5-2 miles out of their way.

The little guy giving out the "High Five of Power!", so dubbed by the cyclocross dude.

Olga about to receive her power high five!

Looking a little confused

Bret talking smack to Olga only 20k in

Maniac Jess showing off the results of the Oil line slip n' slide, err, trail.

Five miles to go. Glen T. taking the real pictures (below) just out of the shot

Coming in for the finish. In a few short months Marc has reached two star maniac status. WTG, honey!

Sarah,
Thanks for sharing the race I almost did! Looks muddy and wet! It looks really pretty out there. I'm bummed I didn't get a chance to meet you; I'm hoping in the next year or so maybe we can meet at another race together when you are all well and better (Hillsboro 38.5 in 2010?!?!)

It does look wet, but everyone is also smiling! I'm sure those power high fives lifted more than a few spirits.

Sarah, thanks so much for coming, and you support of Marc is so precious! Not to mention, the non-runner dude is getting crazy:) Glad Bart had a good time too!

Does "Cowboy" know he's supposed to throw a big party when he gets to two stars?

Thanks for the recap and the pics! Did Mark use the breast-stroke or the crawl for this swim, I mean run?

My training schedule for Canada is taking me out of the circuit for a while. We probably won't see you guys until Cascade Crest. Until then hang in there and take care!

Way to go Marc! I wonder, is he a runner yet?

P.S. I might be interested in pacing at CCC. Let me know if he wants one. You can e-mail me at rcwhester@yahoo.com
