You can't argue with the universe

The Portland Marathon, my hometown marathon, was my first back in 2001 and I completed it again in 2002 and 2003. But then I grew tired of it and was also weary of big marathons in general. (Other large marathons I've completed are NYC and Rock 'n Roll AZ.)

Then a few weeks ago I began getting the itch to run Portland again. I have a lot of friends doing it, both "real" and blogger. And it would fit in nicely with my schedule. But I decided to leave it up to fate. The last day to enter at the regular price, as stated on the website, was this past Sunday, 9/10. That was the day I'd return from the McKenzie river and I told myself I'd register for Portland if there were any entries left. However, during the course of the 50k, I decided that I wasn't really interested in running a road marathon again. I really do love the trails! I wasn't going to register for Portland.

Well, you decide a lot of things while running long that don't necessarily come to fruition. How many first time marathoners say "Never again!", but then eventually go back for more? The marathon folks pushed up the registration date to today. I think the universe knew I needed a bit more time. So you'll find me at the starting line, 7 am, October 1st.

Cool! You'll find me there too - somewhere near the back of the pack, around the 12 minute pace mark. Maybe we could find each other pre-race somewhere? And Rob too?

Congrats. I hope you have a great time in Portland, asphalt and all. Say hi to Rob and Joe for me! and of course Michelle, whose comments I always love.

yay! Wow! How cool to decide to do a marathon just a few weeks before it starts and to know that you can do that :)

Yeah, Sarah! Maybe we can hook up for a pre or post race meal. We'll talk more.

Rock on! Always a good idea to trust the Universe... You'll end up doing what it wants anyway... !
