Hot, hot, hot!

Yesterday it was 104 in Portland. I'm glad I'm taking it easy this week. Monday afternoon I drove up to Seattle to meet some friends for dinner and drove back that same evening. That trip, combined with my mileage over the weekend, made for one tired Sarah this week.

I only ran 10 miles during the week and then 9 miles today in Forest Park. I went with my friend Sharon and we did a loop. It was only 75 degrees when we started but it already felt hot. We didn't know the exact mileage when we were running and we were sure we'd done at least 10. But when I added up the mileage it was only 9. It was a good example of how the heat and humidity can really effect your perceived effort. I'm planning a short run in the neighborhood tomorrow and then I'm going to keep taking it easy next week. I want to feel fresh for the 50K and at this point there's no reason to push it.

Stay cool!

What's up with the heat! We have had a string of 102-104 days, and I can sure relate to the extra effort it takes to run in the heat- it slows me down sooo much.
Take it easy and enjoy your rest time!

It was not only hot, but friggin humid!!! Smart tapering you're doing. PCT will be hot - take care of water and salt.

You know you're an ultrarunner when you start prefacing mileage with "only"...
That's really hot for you folks isn't it?
I only did 6 miles this morning, I just wasn't into it with the humidity. So I'm tapering. yeah, that's it, I'm tapering!

No need to push it now.

I picked up the pace for 3/4 of a mile on Friday when it was 100 degrees at the relay and I immediately got side cramps and had a tough time breathing. I hope it is not that hot on Saturday.

Sarah, good luck this weekend! It's cooling down up here, so maybe it will be nicer for you too. I hope so. I'll be crewing for Rob and Eric at the WR50 this weekend - but I'll spare some positive thoughts for you too!
