The saga continues......

My chiropractor let me go. It wasn't as harsh as that sounds. But he thinks that there's something else going on in my hip/pelvis that he can't treat. I think he did help me, but I'm not seeing the improvement I should if it were simply a muscle strain. So back to my HMO. I had an appointment with a primary provider today and got a referral to Physiatry. I had to look that up. From the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation website:

Rehabilitation physicians are nerve, muscle, bone and brain experts who treat injury or illness non surgically to decrease pain and restore function.

Decreasing pain and restoring function? I could use some of that about now.

On the bright side, this primary provider also commented on how strong my legs are. So I guess I haven't totally lost it yet!

My BIL is currently doing his residency in physiatry and always has to explain what that is.

Hopefully your referral will be as good as my BIL -- he really does seem to understand the whole 'fixing what's broken' from a medical, but not surgical, approach.

I got an appt. for Monday to try ART and cross-friction on my scar tissue and he also treats chronic compartment syndrome! Lest hope, Sarah, ok, some weird doc will help us?

Best wishes that it all goes well, Sarah. I know how frustrating stuff like that can be. Hang in there and hope you're able to hit the trails comfortably soon.

I like that approach to healing. It sounds like we could all use a little more physiatry.

I'll be hoping for a positive outcome.

that's awesome!

Sarah,
I think that's what Lisa Bliss is - a physiatrist. Not sure though. Anyway, hope it works for you. My one and only encounter with that type of doc was via my sister. She is wheelchair bound with cp and saw one for a whole body assessment. Seemed to help!

Hang in there and keep those spirits up!

Sarah,
I know so well what you are going through. :(
I've been battling a similar hip/pelvis thing for 19 months now. I have made the rounds to several chiropractors/LMT/PT- finally to a sports med MD and then sent to a rheumatologist. I've been diagnosted with a connective tissue disorder- anklyosing spondylitis. But really not at peace with that being the cause of all the pain and inability to run without pain. The rheumatologist put me on a medication that made me so sick. Maybe I'll look into a Physiatrist in the Boise area, at this point it wouldn't hurt to get one more opinion right?
I will keep you in my prayers!

Keep the faith. My PT has had me has cut out my running for two weeks now. Thank God for the bike.

Recovery allows us time to rest, grow, get stronger. So I am told :)

Dang dang dang! That is such a bad deal! It is always something! OK group blog hug...we are all having collective good thoughts that you will get this thing licked soon.

My heart is breaking as I read this post. I so want this to be over for you.

Remember the physiotherapist who told me I wouldn't run again? That it was time to give up on that and consider other activities? I knew then he was not the person to treat me.

Whatever happens, do not give up! You may be hitting a wall, but that doesn't mean you are going to give up hope now does it? Runners like you don't do that. :-)

I hope you get it all figured out soon. Until then, keep cross training.

Try to stay postive, Sarah! If anyone can bounce back, YOU can!

Sarah,
I'm thinking about you and sending healing thoughts. Finding the right person to treat you can be an ultra adventure, too. Ralph Yates is a good sports doc if you want yet another name. Stay positive.

Sarah,
I totally agree with you about the injury thing - and the "freak accident" is the scariest because we have absolutely no control over it. I have always hated running on ice, but your injury, and that of a friend (slipped, broke wrist) really have me hating it. I sure hope you get better soon.
