Extreme galloway
Run as fast as you can, then walk.....run as fast as you can, then walk.
Repeat.
That's the way an eight year old runs a 5k. Today was the Niketown 5k out at the Nike world headquarters and we ran it as a family. Our time was about 30 minutes, 30 seconds. Sub 10 minute miles. Not bad for an eight year old, huh? I know who the running star in the family is going to be. It's certainly not me!
In other running news, my knee pain from last week's 50k turned out to be a non-issue. I tentatively went out for 6 miles on Tuesday and felt fine. I'm taking a step back week and have only run short and easy, topping out at 32 miles for the week. Yesterday I had to go out in the afternoon and it was HOT. I really hate running later in the day and in the heat. But its good training for me since it could very well be in the 90's or more for the 50 miler in July. I meant to run only 8 miles, but I miscalculated my loop and it turned out to be 9. The last mile was uphill and I was out of water. On the way back home I met up with the boys at a local park where they had been playing basketball. They were on their bikes and rode with me that last mile. I had planned to walk it but they pulled me along, so to speak.
This week I'll try to bump up the miles and with Lake Youngs on Saturday I should go over 50 miles for the week again. I haven't bumped up the mileage as much as I would have liked. And in a few weeks we are heading to Florida to visit the in-laws. I doubt I'll get much quality running in there. But likely more heat training! After we return I'll have a few weeks to get in some big runs and maybe some hill training. And then it will be taper time!

That's so funny about 'Extreme Galloway'...Our son Christopher is running a 2K next weekend, and I was wondering how he's going to do it, but reading this, I'm sure it will be much of the same, sprint, walk, sprint, etc. =)
Glad your knee is feeling better, July is right around the corner, and you sound very prepared.
Yeah thats the way 90% of kids run. It's called running isn't? You run till you are tired. I even tried to get my step daughter to run with me when she was 18, she said "I can't run that slow!"
He's a little speedster! Love the pose with the medal. I'm glad your knee is feeling good again. You've been training hard and will be well prepared. Sorry we're gonna miss you next weekend when you are up our way, but we'll be heading to Sequim for NODM. Good luck!

Great that your son likes to run too, these days too many kids his age sit on their butts and don't get much exercise. Does he get his hamming-it-up genes from his mother's side ;-)

Wish Michelle and I were going to be at Lake Youngs to see you! It's a nice trail but the hills will take their toll on you. Enjoy the run, I looked through the list of registered runners and they look like a fun lot!

Sorry I haven't been the most responsive blogger as of late. I don't have any sibilance of balance in my life right now. It's all about WS100. I can't wait to step across the starting line and see what the result will be.

good that you actually are running a bit in the heat. (even though you don't like it) it will help for pct as you know from the past.
running in florida, if it doesn't bring you heat it will definently bring you humidity. that might help also for pct.
i am just amazed at your improvement. mind boggling really. your hard work shows. and what is really cool is seeing you enjoy yourself. that is what is important is to have fun while doing this. looking forward to more great reports on running and family.

What an amazing accomplishment. What was I doing when I was 8?! Certaintly not running under 10min miles for a 5K. Undoubtedly wants to run like mom and dad. This past Monday I went to see a pro-triathlete talk. Someone asked him if his parents were active and he spoke about his father who picked up running in his late 20's and inspired him to also be a runner. Running he said is something he could see doing for the rest of his life, long after his career in triathlon is done. I thought that was pretty cool.
