This and that

Kids fun run

I just registered for the Portland Marathon...that is, the Portland Kids Marathon. This is a very cool kids race. Its a 2 mile run and covers the first and last miles of the regular marathon course. So the kids get to start at the same starting line and finish at the same finishing line as the marathon runners. I'm running it with my 7 year old son. We ran it together last year and had a blast! I was very impressed with his performance. I wasn't sure how he'd do since it was his longest race to date. We started out holding hands and I told him it was okay to walk if he wanted. So for the first mile we took a few 20 second walk breaks. But by the time we were on the second mile there was no stopping him! We ran through the cheerleader gauntlet and he had fun slapping some skin. Then during the last half you run up Front St. with the marathoners coming down the other side. Seeing the marathoners is another big motivator and a lot of them cheer on the kids. We finished in about 21-1/2 minutes. Not bad for a 6 year old! I wasn't expecting to work up a sweat, but I'll be better prepared for a blazing time this year. : )

Husbands can be funny

Last weekend Marc went on a training run in the gorge for our upcoming 50K. Along this route he met another runner "Mike", who was doing hill repeats. Mike asked Marc if he was training for PCT. Marc's reply: What's that?

I don't know about you, but it just tickles me that Marc doesn't even know the name of the 50K he's training for. After some more discussion, Marc realized that he is training for PCT. Turns out Mike is running the 50 miler.

Training

Training-wise, its been an easy week so far. I ran 5 miles on Tuesday and 5 miles today. This weekend will be my last hard training weekend before the 50K. I'd like to run as far as I can (up to about 18 miles) on Saturday and then enough on Sunday to make up 31 miles for the weekend. I tried running with my handheld today and I can see that it will take more practice for me to get used to it. I'll train this weekend with my hydration pack, but plan to wear my belt for the 50K.

I'm starting to get excited about the 50K, but need to remember that my goals are to finish, and most of all, have fun!

kids events are great - it's awesome for them to take part in what we do, and great for them to be active when they're young! Seattle also has a great kids marathon event in conjuction with the adult marathon.

i love the part about your husband!

that's awesome about the kids fun run. the longest we've gotten ash to run is about .25 mile. Of course, he's only 3.5. we've got time :)

That cracks me up that your husband didn't know the name of the race!

The Portland Kids Marathon sounds like a fun filled event, especially getting to run a race with your son. My kids like to have races around the house, they even tape my old race numbers to there shirts. The things kids do! Handhelds are pain. I’ve been carrying mine on every run just to get my arm use to it! GOOD LUCK with your training, enjoy your taper and have fun =)

I will make sure to wave to you and your son. I can't wait for Portland, but I need some time cause I got some work to do. PCT is getting super close, but you'll have a blast.
